EM 385 1-1: Construction Hazard Awareness Course for Contractors /includes OSHA 30 Hour  (5 days) (44 hours)


Course Description: To enhance the awareness of Site Safety & Health Officers (SSHOs) and other project personnel performing work on Federal construction, service, and environmental contracts, and to provide all contractor on-site personnel an opportunity to obtain adequate knowledge to assess unsafe worksite conditions, U.S. Safety utilizes USACE/ NAVFAC Construction Hazard Awareness Course for Contractors. This course is similar to the 40-hr USACE/NAVFAC Construction Hazard Awareness Course taught to USACE/NAVFAC personnel, except for subjects not applicable to contractors.


The SSHO, at a minimum, must have completed the 30-hour OSHA Construction safety class or as an equivalent, 30 hours of formal construction safety and health training covering the subjects of the OSHA 30-hour course (see Appendix A, paragraph 4.b) applicable to the work to be performed and given by qualified instructors. If the SSHO has the permitted equivalent training, he/she is also required to have five (5) years of construction industry safety experience or three (3) years if he/she possesses a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or safety and health degree.

This course is a requirement for SSHO’s on some contracts

Competent Person OSHA Permit Required Confined Space Entry with EXTRACTION (8 hours)


Course Description: Confined space incidents are not the most common, but they can be the most deadly. The reason for this is that hazards tend to be misunderstood or underestimated. Many confined spaces fatalities involve not one, but two victims, the worker and the rescuer. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Competent Person OSHA Permit Required Confined Space Entry with Extraction Certification Card.


OSHA’s Permit-Required Confined Spaces Regulation was created to help prevent these tragic accidents. Through discussion and activities, our professional instructors will break down the regulation into terms that are easily understood. Laser Training (1/2 hour)


Course Description: Laser operators are required to receive laser safety training. Our course covers training on class I, II and III-A lasers teaching the fundamentals of laser operations, bio-effects of laser radiation to the eyes and skin and control measures to protect the worker and other employees. Upon successful completion participants will receive a Laser Training Certification Card.

Competent Person Trenching and Excavation (8 Hours)

Course Description: Participants are taught from OSHA’s excavation standard (29 CFR 1926-Subpart P) which requires workers in trenches and excavations to be protected. Cave-ins are perhaps the most feared trenching hazard; but other potentially fatal hazards exist, including asphyxiation, toxic fumes, drowning, electrocution and explosions. Protection from the many hazards associated with trenching and excavation is achieved through knowledge of the environment, technical mastery of support systems, hazard awareness and proper application. Each participant will receive a manual. Upon successful completion participants will receive a Competent Person Trenching and Excavating Certification Card.

Competent Person Fall Protection Course (6-8 hours)


Course Description: The objective of this course is to provide workers at elevation with continuous and effective means of fall protection. Practical methods for using various types of safety equipment will help prepare the participant to function as a Competent Person. Our program complies with OSHA Regulations (1926.500). Upon successful completion participants will receive a Competent Person Fall Protection Certification Card.

Course Description: Our course will help identify the dangers of working with support scaffolds and how these risks can be minimized by knowing the correct ways to erect, maintain, inspect and use scaffolding equipment. It is designed for Erector and Competent Person Training. Upon successful completion participants will receive an Erectors Support Scaffold Certification Card or Competent Person Support Scaffolding Certification Card.

Course Description: Our course will help participants identify the dangers of working with suspended scaffolds and how these risks can be minimized by knowing the correct ways to erect, maintain, inspect and use Swing Stage Scaffolding equipment. It is designed for Erector and Competent Person Training. Upon successful completion participants will receive an Erectors Suspended Scaffold Certification Card or Competent Person Suspended Scaffolding Certification Card.

Crane: Qualified Rigger Training (8 hours)


Course Description: Our course is designed to meet OSHA’s new crane compliance standard, for qualified riggers. A qualified rigger is defined as a qualified person who, by possession of a recognized degree, certificate or professional standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training and experience, successfully demonstrated the ability to solve/resolve problems relating to rigging. A qualified rigger is needed during assembly/disassembly of cranes (1926.1404(r)(1)), when employees are engaged in hooking, unhooking, or guiding the load, or in the initial connection of a load to a component or structure and are within the fall zone (1926.1425(c)).

Crane: Qualified signalperson Training (4 hours)


Course Description: Our course is designed to meet OSHA’s new crane compliance standard for qualified signalpersons. A qualified signalperson is defined as a persons who knows and understands the type of signals used at the worksite, is competent in using these signals understands the operations and limitations of the equipment (including the crane dynamics involved in swinging, raising, lowering and stopping loads and in boom deflection from hoisting loads), knows and understands the relevant signal person qualification requirements specified in subpart CC (1926.1419-1926.1422; 1926.1428) and has passes an oral or written exam and a practical performance test.


A signalperson must be used when the point of operation is not in full view of the crane operator (1926.1419(a)), when the operator’s view is obstructed in the direction the equipment is traveling, or when the operator or the person handling the load determines that a signal person is needed because of site-specific safety concerns.

Flagger Training (4 hours)


Course Description: Controlling traffic through work areas is one of the most important and dangerous operations in construction maintenance. Our Flagger Training Course is a comprehensive skill-building session that meets Federal industry guidelines, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) guidelines, and the ANSI Standard ISEA-107-1999. Upon successful completion participants will receive a Flagger Training Certification Card.


The primary objectives of the program are to train flaggers to provide safe passage of traffic through and around work areas, and to minimize confusion by applying standard flagging procedures.
